One thing all dogs love to do is play! Play time can be running through an agility course, a visit to the local dog park or as simple as playing in a box of packing peanuts that the delivery person just brought to the front door! As you may know, all my Pomeranians at the Pommy Mommy home are rescue dogs, so I want to show you how we do play time rescue pomeranian style.
One night Yoki and Daddy were on the floor and Yoki decided it would be fun to play “tug of war” with dad’s shirt! This was her first official “play time” that she actually played with an object for more than 5 minutes. They ended up playing for over 45 minutes! Play Time Rescue Pomeranian
Other ways I teach “play” is to put a wrapping paper tube in front of a doorway that the girls have to cross over. The goal is for them to check it out by sniffing it first. Once they sniff it I praise them and give them a small treat. Once they jump or step over it they get rewarded again. By doing this activity with the wrapping paper it is stimulating the Pomeranian’s thinking process! This activity can also be done with a cardboard box. Just make sure the dog can’t walk around it. They must walk on it, then the next day open the box so it creates a tunnel. This way they are made to walk through it. Your Pomeranian may not understand this at first, make sure to help and encourage them through the process.
It’s so rewarding to be able to teach your dog something new that they enjoy. Play time is a great time for you and your Pomeranian to bond and have fun! If you would like some Pomeranian-sized toys and treats… why not try a Pommy Box? Play Time Rescue Pomeranian

My Pomeranian does not play, he’s almost 6 years old and only likes to sit on your lap getting pets and pats. My Pomchi plays, but he’s very independent and prefers to play either alone or with my Pom, but usually my Pom does not want to play.
My Dogs are also a type of rescue, my Pomchi is a real rescue (was rescued from a Dog hoarder), my Pom was just re-homed by his original owner.
If you want to get him or her to play you have to really want it. My pup runs faster than a cheetah. I let him out and he ran and didn’t stop. So just get him or her to get active.
we just got our puppy pom, for christmas he has had some health issues since we have gotten him. he does like to play. but when he plays he likes to chew our hands feet and arms. i know this is normal puppy play. any advice would be awesome. first time owning my baby. he is truly a joy.
Read all the blog posts on Pommy Mommy and be very patient with your puppy. Pomeranians are very smart.
Thank you for this!!! Pomeroy spent 8 years in a cage in a horrible puppy mill and does not understand toys at all. I tried kong toys filled with doggie peanut butter but with very little success. Can’t wait to try these ideas!!
I got my rescue Pom in December and FINALLY in May she learned to go through the front door. Before that she had to be carried through. She was terrified of the door in the beginning. Now she will play bow and race around the living room. We are getting there!
My pom didn’t know how to play when I adopted him either. He also is deathly afraid of squeaker toys, and it is very hard to find toys that don’t squeak! I’ve had him for 2 years now and he loves playing with his toys but if he makes it squeak he runs away with his tail between his legs. Any suggestions on how to make him less afraid?
Awe… no wonder my Teddy doesn’t know how to play….poor thing…I never thought of that being why he doesn’t know how
We have two male poms, one a rescue, the other spent his first two years in a crate. Neither knew how to play with toys. It has taken two years to teach them how to play fetch with a small ball. I tried different toys until I found ones they seemed to respond to. Just recently, the oldest one who was four when we got him, responded to a rag doll type dog toy. He understood that it was a pull toy (he was the rescue pom). The younger one is sometimes afraid of toys, but repetition seems to be the key, and making playtime fun, not frustrating tones.

I bought my Pomeranian puppy born this year Aug 2 and got her Oct 20 as soon as I got in my car I heard her cough, then more coughing, before getting attached since I am ill and a shut in and got her for a emotional support pup, I wanted one that I could train and one without emotional problems from previous owners or I would have gone to the SPCA/ this store Pet Land is upscale and has a good reputation. I signed a contract not really reading it and taking the words of the sales clerks. first of all they lied to me about her chip, saying it was a satellite chip which makes a big difference than ordinary chips for they could locate my dog if someone stole her. Then the very next day I called them and told them that my puppy has kennel cough which means her kennel mate also has it and most likely all the dogs in their kennels have it and I was going to report them for I am not healthy enough to care for a sick dog. They told me to read my signed contract NO REFUNDS NO RETURNS. I am still dealing with her illness after taking her to the vet in the 4 days that they give you to get a free first visit and they even diagnosed her with kennel cough. she was just 3 pounds so cute, Her name is Ms. Bailey Irish Cream. the vets who I took her to are nice but not like my vet. Since she was not getting well and after Thanksgiving the doctors never called me back as promised, so I had to pay for the medication for her coughing. When I finally had enough for I am now head over heels in love with her I took her to my vet. He kept her while I went to my doctors appointment then I went back it was a few hours. She needed her nails clipped which the other vets missed, the medication they gave me had no antibiotic in the cough medication for it was just for coughing. So he gave me antibiotics cleaned her anal area gave me a poo bag to collect her stool then told me a fact that no one told me about this breed, their hind legs one of them if popped out of its socket can be massaged into replacement but the other side needs surgery for if it pops out it stays out . That is a very expensive surgery. Also I did not know that they run like a rabid jack rabbit once outside which could cause the problem I spoke about. It took me and two neighbors to catch her for they once were 30 to 40 pound dogs that were used in herding sheep and also as guard dogs it is in their DNA so even though they are so tiny they are not afraid of cars or humans or anything. She ran right out to the street and people use my street as a cut off to avoid a stop light on one of our main roads here in Topeka KS. after the experience I had with trying to catch her for they love to play catch me if you can, will come almost in grabbing distance they run fast away, I am disabled in walking and forget running using a cane. I called the store manager and told them how much does a personal Vet Nurse make per hour? that they should knock off at least 300.00 off my bill at Pet Land card. They said NO WAY read your contract so I did and if you do not buy 3 products per mo of their choice, their dog food and vitamins an stress medication. then it voids the replacement of the dog if she were to pass a way. I was already in a broken contract making all the things I was suppose to get .. I asked them where is the pink blanket with her name embroidered on it, they had no comment. While I was at their vet for the last time to pick up my puppy after an over night stay a gal was there with a cute pup, I asked her where she got it she said Pet Land so I told her wow you may have her checked for Kennel Cough, she said she got her pup at our local mall, so without any warning no signs saying we will be moving to the mall, they up and moved during this stressful time with me and my anger towards them and my threat to go to the SPCA and write a letter to our local news paper editor about them selling me a sick dog almost 2000 bucks. with the new costs of getting her well it will come to that.
I am going to write to Pet Land headquarters for a last time request for funds returned but now for at least 1000.00 since all of my time has been spent instead of the love and training I played nurse maid and deserve a wage. So if I ever get it I will post but MS Bailey is now getting better due to me going back to my vet who not just cares about the pet but the owner and is a wonderful loving person. I will never go back to the other pet hospital for they missed so many things and lead me to believe they were giving her healing medications. she just coughs a few times a day not all night long an day as well I am worn out and sicker than I was when I bought my most wonderful loving puppy for now she is easy to train and we are emotionally bonding. they are great guard dogs. she hears the mailman put the mail in my box on the front porch and she pops up out of her slumber and takes notice if it is danger approaching
This was my Pomeranian puppy story and hopefully she will be in full swing soon. NO MORE OUT SIDE without her leash I could not put one on her for it would affect her throat area causing to to cough. I hope you all make sure if you get a pet at a pet store to take more than the 5 min they allowed me for I believe I would have heard the cough in the store, they were more concerned in getting that contract signed!
