What is the funniest or craziest thing that your Rescue Pomeranian does that makes you laugh so hard you cry? … Callie – quivering and crying for food with real tears on her cheeks… Chloe – At bedtime she will flop around the bed and talk/bark/yip until she finds the right spot.
Are you a working Pommy Mommy or a stay at home Pommy Mommy?
When I first got Callie I didn’t really work the first 3 years of her life. She was very spoiled getting to be with me that much, that often. I attribute her calm temperament and such well behaved behavior to being able to be home all day. When I did go back to work she adjusted slowly as my mom had recently got a pom and they could be together.
My Story
Now that my mom is retired she often goes to Grandma’s for the day along with my other Pom, Chloe. Chloe does not deal well with me leaving for work. In the morning she knows my routine, so when I brush my teeth or reach for my shoes or coat, she will start wailing and crying begging me not to leave. Someone has to hold her tight so she doesn’t try to chase after me to the car… it breaks my heart but a girl’s gotta work.
When I was in high school I was watching the Westminster Dog Show and saw a Pomeranian prancing along and was immediately in love. We had a miniature poodle at the time, but in my mind, the smaller, the fluffier, the better. I dreamed about the day I could have my own pom.
When I was in college I had a boyfriend who’s grandmother was a Pomeranian breeder. It was the first time I got to be around a real pom and fell even more in love.
In 2008, ten years after discovering the breed, I was getting married to my now ex-husband. He said for our wedding he wanted to get something really special… I got my first Pomeranian. I was so thrilled to finally get my most favorite breed. When I found Callie I fell instantly in love with her. We called the breeder and found out she had actually already been purchased sometime ago, but she’d just got off the phone with the buyer who had backed out of purchasing her. Apparently the breeder had gotten many calls on her but I happened to be the lucky one who got to make her mine.
I almost hate to admit this but during my whole wedding weekend, I knew the following week we were going to pick her up. I was honestly more excited about getting her than the wedding at times. When we did go to pick her up it was one of the most wonderful days of my life. I remember seeing all the puppies on the porch and she was standing on top of the puppy igloo. She was a princess from the moment we got her and she still is.
Callie is now 5 and last spring my mom had been searching a website that had many kinds of dogs on it. She said she’d seen several poms. I started looking but not really looking to add to my Pommy child… just to see who was out there. Isn’t that always the way it starts. I was flipping pages and found Chloe… she was a doll. The moment I saw her I knew I had to go get her. I called the breeder and made arrangements immediately. She was in the small town of Paris, MO. So we always tease her that she thinks she’s a French Pom… all sophisticated.
Callie and Chloe get along great. They have very different personalities but compliment each other well. I don’t have children of my own nor do I plan on it. My Poms are my children and I treat them like it too. I love to dress them in matching outfits, I cry when they get hurt or aren’t feeling well, and I make sure they are spoiled rotten. I get teased in my area for having a dog stroller but I can’t imagine not having one. Sometimes we like going on long walks and they can’t handle the whole walk. It’s also great at other times when they want to sit at my level when I’m working at the computer.
One of my favorite hobbies is photography and photographing my Poms are a big part of that hobby. Sometimes the moment strikes and I get inspired by something they are doing and snap… snap… snap goes the shutter of my camera. My dogs are very well behaved when I photograph them they seem like little super models when they are posed.
I’m not going to lie, it has taken a bunch of hours of training to get them to pose, but I think the secret is photographing them in the same few spots. They know when I place them in those spots we are taking pictures. It’s funny to watch them because each one knows how to pose without me asking. Just in case the rare situation comes around and they don’t want to cooperate, a treat or toy will usually get them back into supermodel status. Every so often I will walk by the stairs at my mom’s house and Callie will jump on them and start striking a pose, baiting me to take her picture. When I brought home her first tiara, the second it went on… she immediately started posing like the princess she knows she is.
Callie is my ‘mellow’ dog. She lays around all day and acts as if she would never hurt a flea… if she ever had them, she’d make friends with them. If you ever met her, you’d probably think she is a vicious and would tear your head off. When I take her to the pet store, she will bark, snarl and practically foam at the mouth but once she smells you and your dog, she’s fine, will sniff and walk away as if she is not interested. She hates being on a lead. She feels threatened because she can’t smell anyone. When she’s at the off leash dog park she is just as mellow as when she’s at home… it seems very strange.
Chloe LOVES everyone. Whenever someone leaves she always tries to leave with them. She will cry if she can’t go with. One time she squeezed out the door after a pizza delivery and tried to jump in the car with the delivery man. She just really wanted to go with him… or she really likes pizza.
When we got Chloe she was so small. She didn’t really walk and it was more like bouncing. I bought a dog bed that was very fluffy and when she got in it she looked like she was in a bouncy house. She would run and jump into it order to bounce around in it. She loves jumping or bouncing on anything squishy or fluffy. She jumps head first into the basket of toys and swims through them.
Chloe as a puppy was also a very smart dog from the beginning. Mom would keep treats on the piano and she figured out she could walk up the stairs, squeeze through the bars, and walk out onto the piano to get “her” treats.
She loves her stroller… I’ve never seen anything like it, she would ‘go missing’ in the house and I would find that she had somehow climbed up into it… and obviously I hadn’t thought to look there because… hmmm… I hadn’t put her in there.
The other thing she would do was climb up onto the kitchen chairs. My mom would keep her Poms special diet food on the kitchen table when Callie and Chloe visit. Chloe could smell the food and wanted some, so she figured how to push the chair out and jump up on the table to get her some food. She was very successful.
Lastly, she has also figured out how to roll down the windows in the car. She finds it very funny… or I think she does, to push the button so the window rolls down. Thank goodness for child/Pomeranian locks!
My Poms have also caught a little bit of the Local Celebrity Bug. At the Iowa State football games they have “Pet of the Week” and this past fall during the first home game, they were featured at the game as the “Pets of the Week”. Yep, I caught them outside with their sunglasses on signing autograph’s for all the kids.
I know this was supposed to be featuring me as a Pommy Mommy but my Poms are the center of my life.
