Most of the time it doesn’t amaze me what individuals do, can do or will do when it comes to animals. As mommies of these precious little creatures we call our furry children, we go to great lengths to accommodate and bring happiness to an otherwise cruelty ridden world that our rescues have endured. So when I see articles about people as individuals creating cool rescues or taking action against puppy mills, abusive breeders or just plain cruel pet owners I’m not surprised because we as pet and more specifically Pomeranian owners take pride in being better people.
What surprises me is when a company, whose main responsibility is to create profits, decides to forgo profits and do something awesome for animals. That’s exactly what has happened with a Santa Monica, CA based company called Macerich. This awesome company is the parent to a metro Phoenix Mall Operator named Westcor Malls who decided it would better serve pets by not renewing leases to anymore pet stores that sell live animals.
Only Leasing to Pet Rescues
Instead Westcor Malls is only leasing to pet rescues and animal adoption centers and is totally phasing out pet stores altogether. I can’t be more thrilled to hear something like this. Here’s what Melissa Rupp, assistant marketing manager at Macerich owned SanTan Village in Gilbert had to say; “Our focus is now directed to working with local pet rescue organizations in our communities and pet accessory retailers to serve the needs of our shoppers,”… I don’t know about you but I think that’s just cool. If I lived in Pheonix I would give them a big Pommy Mommy hug and I know Sophia would want to lick them to death. (Yea, I know, she’s kinda crazy like that) pet rescues
Animal rescue groups really like the idea of the big store fronts because their pet store counterparts have always enjoyed the comfort of attracting new customers. Now the rescues and adoption centers will bring in new customers, and raise money for and awareness about animal overpopulation. “Some people have this stigma around visiting a shelter, they may be sad … and then you offer people this unique setting,” said Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman Bretta Nelson in an article printed in the Sacramento Bee . “It’s more cozy. It’s more homelike.” pet rescues
I have to tell you as a Pommy Mommy, Whenever I walk by a pet store I am always attracted to the cute little puppies but then it dawns on me that they are probably from puppy mills and then I have to walk on past. Now that some of them will be filled with beautiful rescues I can’t wait to go in and probably rescue some more.
Let’s give a big round of applause to Macerich for doing the right thing by way of our potential furry little children… clap… clap… clap! pet rescues
