Today I’m answering a question about dry skin in your Pomeranian. Pommy Mommy’s Facebook friend Sheila asked about a skin treatment for her Pomeranian’s dry skin that didn’t involve using steroids or medication. Obviously, she is looking for more of a natural treatment. Natural Dry Skin Remedy for Pomeranians
Question: Do you have any good suggestions for dry, flaky, itchy Pomeranian skin? I’m trying to avoid yet another vet visit and steroid injection and or medication. I have tried oatmeal shampoo and adding the Omega 3’s to the diet. My Pomeranian also has thyroid condition and is due for thyroid check. Just wondered if you have any ideas on something topical yet gentle. Thanks!
Answer: Sheila it Sounds like you’ve tried just about everything for your Pomeranians skin!

Skin conditions can be very frustrating and expensive when having to visit your local vet. If it’s a condition that can be managed at home you can try using an organic unrefined coconut oil. Coconut oil is a great natural moisturizer for skin. It’s very good for Pomeranians and people too!
Not only do I rub some on my Pomeranians skin in the winter or when they have a dry coat, I also use it on their paws and a tiny bit on their nose. This helps prevent painful cracking skin and keeps it nice and moist. Coconut oil is something that you can also add to your Pomeranians diet on a daily basis. Some of the benefits that have been reported include: reduced or elimination of body odor and bad breath; healthier skin and elimination of rashes, itchiness, etc.; coats becoming shiny and healthy looking; improved energy; better digestion; reduction of excess weight; relief from arthritic-like symptoms; cleared-up infections; expulsion of worms; and improved overall health. Applied topically it aids in the healing of cuts, bites, stings, and infections. Natural Dry Skin Remedy… for Pomeranians
As I mentioned above make sure to get “unrefined” coconut oil. It’s not going to smell or taste like coconut at all. You can purchase this at your local grocery store if they have an organic section, or you will find this at Whole Foods for around $8-$9.00. I use a brand called Spectrum and Purium.
If it’s cold outside the coconut oil will be in a solid form. However if you take a small amount and put it in a dish and heat it in the microwave or on the stove for just a few SECONDS it will take on a liquid form. This is the only oil (besides olive oil) that I use in my home. I rub a little on my elbows, under my eyes, and use it for my everyday cooking! It’s a staple in my pantry! 🙂 Natural Dry Skin Remedy for Pomeranians
