I work for the Old Town Alexandria, Chamber of Commerce which is conveniently, 3 blocks from home. I got very lucky because Old Town Alexandria is a very dog friendly town is easy to take care of a fur baby here. I share custody of Pomeroy with his Dad (my ex) who, as a consultant, works from home most days also. When he can’t be there all day, I take Pomeroy and either work from home or take him to work – where of course he is snatched up by my co-workers… and I barely get to see him until it’s time to go home. Sometimes I think I’ll have to wrestle a co-worker to get my little Pomeroy back.
My gorgeous 16 year old Pomeranian, Pomeroy, started out life under miserable circumstances. He had been a puppy mill dog who had spent the first eight years of his life in a cage, with 200 other dogs. The owner happened to pass away and the state came in and auctioned off the dogs. Thanks to donations, the Humane Education Society of Tennessee was able to purchase Pomeroy along with other dogs. When Pomeroy was rescued he was found to have aluxating patella and his all teeth needed to be pulled due to severe tartar buildup. His teeth were so caked with tartar that he couldn’t close his mouth and to add insult upon injury… literally he sitting and soaking in his own urine. I can’t even imagine because it sickens me.
The Humane Education Society sent Pomeroy to a Foster Home in Chantilly, Virginia and they listed his picture on Petfinders.com, through the Northern Virginia branch of the SPCA. I was looking on Petfinders.com and when I spotted him I was automatically drawn to him. I contacted the SPCA and knew I had to meet this beautiful boy. I instantly fell in love.
I always thought I would adopt a Red Pom… but no, Pomeroy is a beautiful snow white Pomeranian. It took two weeks before I was able to adopt him. He was quite nervous when I first brought him home but within 24 hours he staked his claim and really bonded with me. It didn’t take long for him to begin taking responsibility to guard “our” home… barking whenever someone strange approached. I always give him a… Good boy, Pomeroy… Good Boy.
He prances around town with such panache, its hard to tell who is showing off who – Pomeroy showing off his mom or me showing off my Pom… it’s a wonderful little competition.
Pomeroy is a former Hallmark card contest winner and just became NOVADOG Magazine’s cover boy this past month and is now so spoiled – he refuses to get out of bed in the mornings without at least 5 minutes of belly rubs!… but of course I oblige.
I’m not sure who is spoiled more me for having a wonderful Pomeranian in Pomeroy or him. I think knowing what horrible circumstances he came from I am always trying to make up for it by pampering and spoiling him like no other. I am grateful everyday for being allowed the opportunity to be a Pommy Mommy.
