I love taking my two adorable Pommies, Foxy and Bear-Bear, to their “Grandma and Grandpa’s” place out in the country. We live in the busy suburbs of St. Louis, but my parents recently acquired a small home on several acres that’s “out in the country,” away from all of the noise and city lights. Even though they don’t have any animals on the property, it is a place we have affectionately dubbed “The Farm.”
It’s peaceful and quiet. Big, gorgeous trees surround a small but decent-size pond. When the sun shines on the water, it’s absolutely beautiful. It’s a place that can make you forget your worries. It’s a place to get away without going too far. It’s a place our Poms seemed to fall in love with the first time we took them there. It’s a place they know by name – they break into a frenzy of running in circles and barking like crazy when we say, “We’re going to the farm!” Bear-Bear runs out to the Baja (the Subaru we always take to the farm), then we put Foxy in the car and load up all the gear before heading out. We have to make sure to pack all things Pommy – leashes, food, treats, water bowls, towels (in case the boys get dirty) and anything else we might need.
It’s so much fun when we get to the farm – the first thing Foxy and Bear-Bear do is bound across a strip of land on one side of the water and then make their way around the entire pond. This “ritual” they’ve developed is too cute! My husband, Travis, and I are right behind them! After they’ve “hiked” around the pond, Foxy and Bear-Bear like to go their separate ways to explore the trees, grass and smells of the farm. They love being able to explore off the leash – that’s a real treat for them because we always keep them leashed at the park or anywhere else we go. They’re allowed to be off the leash at the farm as long as they don’t venture too far and are always within our eyesight.
Foxy, who has always been our little explorer, sometimes likes to go a bit too far up into the hills. I think Foxy is really a “Country Pom” at heart! If he doesn’t come when we call him, we can just leash him to a stake in the ground so he can still roam, but won’t go too far. Usually, he’s a good boy and comes when Mama calls.
Bear-Bear’s favorite farm activity is going for a ride in the paddle boat around the pond! Foxy likes it, too, but Bear-Bear really seems to love taking paddle boat rides. He just lays down in the boat and smiles – it cracks me up! Foxy and Bear-Bear also have fun at the farm playing with my mom’s dog, a Golden/Chow named Simba. Even though Simba is about 10 times their size, they all have fun running and playing together. Simba also keeps a protective watch over them.
Travis and I have a great time playing with Foxy and Bear-Bear at the farm, and the boys also like hanging out with their “Grandma” and “Grandpa.”
A good time is always had by all!

I love reading the adventures of your boys theyre too cute.
I love living in the country too, I live on 75 acres, but there is a pitfall for small dogs & that is coyotes. My little boy Tuff Guy was eaten by coyotes last week.
Tricia… I’m sorry to hear that about Tuff Guy.
