Are you thinking of getting a Pomeranian? Preparing to dog sit for a friend? Or are you just curious about what makes these tiny toy dogs unique? The following list shares seven important facts about Pomeranians that you should consider when getting to know this pup.
1. They’re Spitz Dogs
Pomeranians are descendants of the Spitz family, a group of dogs named for their pointed nozzles. This family includes Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Keeshond, and other big, hard-working canines. While Pomeranians do exhibit the playful personality characteristic of toy dogs, they also still share some of the Spitz temperament. This explains why, if you’ve ever met a Pom, they are likely tougher than you expected.
2. They Can Be Hard to Train
This Spitz side of their personality can also make Pomeranians hard to train simply because they like to be the leader. Because of this, it’s essential to show your Pommy that you are the one who calls the shots. If you establish this early on, your Pom should follow suit.
3. They’re Loyal
A Pommy’s loyalty is one of the most enjoyable things about them. If you have a full household, there may be one person that your Pomeranian seems to favor. As mentioned above, you can use this to your advantage when training by having the Pom’s favorite person act as the alpha. Their loyalty also goes hand-in-hand with a need for loyalty from you. This brings us to the next item on our list of important facts about Pomeranians.
4. They Need Attention
Just as Pomeranians will happily treat you with love and devotion, you should give your Pom the same in return. Pommys love to sit on your lap or follow you wherever you go. They love to be pet, and they love to be groomed. If you give your Pommy plenty of attention, they will be happy and listen to your orders.
5. They Can Be High MaintenanceÂ
Similarly, this need for attention can be seen as high maintenance. Pom’s also not only like being groomed, but they need it regularly. They have two hair coats, giving them their adorable, fluffy look. However, if these coats aren’t routinely brushed and trimmed occasionally, they can risk overheating and other issues.
6. They’re Fragile
Pomeranians are toy dogs, which means they’re predisposed to some health concerns because of their size. One example is luxating patellas, for instance, when the knee cap slips out of place. Another risk is a collapsing trachea. This can be avoided by ensuring that your Pommy always wears a harness rather than a collar for walks.
7. If You Have Kids… Beware
A Pommy’s fragility also means that they can’t handle any rough play. If you’re considering a Pomeranian for your family dog, consider how your child may show affection for the pup. The loyal and loving Pommy can be great doggie for the kiddos, but it just depends on how you think they interact with each other.
