A Pomeranian Rescue Story: Punkin the Pomeranian

by Pommy Mommy

Losing a pet is always heartbreaking, and after saying goodbye to three beloved Lhasa Apsos, each of whom lived to the age of 15, my husband and I decided we couldn’t go through the pain again. We told ourselves, “No more dogs. It’s just too hard to lose another family member.” Famous last words. As often happens, life had other plans for us, and we were about to meet a special Pomeranian named Punkin who would change our minds forever.

The Beginning of Punkin’s Rescue Journey

Punkin the PomeranianIt all started at a BBQ. We were hosting some friends on a Saturday, and as we chatted and shared stories, one of our friends mentioned a lady they knew who rescues Yorkies. This lady, they said, was looking for a home for a sweet little Pomeranian. Naturally, our interest was piqued, even though we had sworn off getting another dog. Still, something about that story tugged at our hearts. By the following Monday, the lady brought Punkin the Pomeranian to meet us—and it was love at first sight. We immediately knew that Punkin was meant to be part of our family.

Punkin’s Health Challenges

We took him to the vet shortly after adopting Punkin for a routine checkup. That’s when we received what we thought was devastating news: Punkin had an enlarged heart. His heart was so large that it filled the entire heart cavity, which the vet said was quite rare. The prognosis wasn’t good, and we were told that Punkin the Pomeranian might not live long. We were crushed, but Punkin had a fighting spirit despite the grim diagnosis. Five years later, he’s still with us, proving that love and care can work wonders.

Life with Punkin: The Ultimate Daddy’s Boy

My husband drives a truck for a living and is often gone five or six days a week. Punkin—affectionately known as “PunkyWunky Doodlebug”—became my companion during that time. He’s my baby and stays by my side all day long. But when my husband comes home, everything changes. Punkin craves his daddy’s attention and won’t leave his side. He even sleeps on my husband’s pillow like a little person.

Spoiling Our Little Punkin

I’m pretty sure Punkin is the most spoiled Pomeranian in the world—but then again, as a Pommy Mommy, I know we all think that about our fur babies. I love spoiling Punkin, and he seems to love it, too. One of his favorite things is dressing up in cute outfits; he even enjoys playing dress-up. Last Christmas, we bought him an adorable elf costume, and he wore it proudly all day long, strutting around as if he were Santa’s little helper.

Punkin’s Favorite Activities

Punkin is not just a cute little Pomeranian who enjoys dressing up—he’s also full of energy and loves to engage in fun activities. One of his favorite games is doing tricks for Cheerios, and he’s become quite the little showman. He talks on command, making everyone laugh with his adorable “conversations.”

Walks are another one of Punkin’s favorite pastimes. He loves to go on long walks, exploring the world with his tiny paws. In the winter, Punkin gets extra excited when he sees snow, jumping and playing in the fluffy white powder like a little kid. And when summer rolls around, we take him swimming, where he dons his life jacket and splashes around like a pro.

Punkin also loves car rides and enjoys visiting all the stores that allow pets. People instantly fall in love with him everywhere we go, and it’s easy to see why. His joyful personality and cute appearance make him the star of any outing.

A Pomeranian with Human-Like Qualities

Punkin isn’t just a dog to us—he’s a family member who often thinks he’s human. His “human-like” qualities are both endearing and hilarious. Whether it’s how he sleeps on the pillow next to my husband or looks at us when he’s trying to communicate, Punkin has developed many characteristics that make him seem more like a person than a pet.

We spend so much time together that it’s no surprise Punkin has picked up these human-like traits. It’s one of the reasons why we’ve decided to get Punkin a brother or sister. We want him to connect with his natural Pomeranian instincts and have a companion with whom to share his doggy adventures. As I write this, we are currently searching for the perfect sibling for our little guy.

The Power of Love and Companionship

I often think about how much joy and love Punkin has brought into our lives. Despite his heart condition, he has lived a whole and happy life, and I genuinely believe that all the love we give him has kept him going strong. He’s not just a pet—he’s a godsend, and I wouldn’t trade him for anything.

Many people might shy away from adopting a dog with health issues, but Punkin’s story is a testament to the power of love and care. His enlarged heart may have seemed like a reason to worry, but it hasn’t stopped him from living a life filled with joy, adventure, and companionship.

A Special Bond with Pomeranians

Before Punkin came into our lives, I never would have imagined how much a Pomeranian could change everything. I had always loved dogs, but there’s something special about the Pomeranian breed. They are loyal, loving, and have such prominent personalities packed into their tiny bodies. Punkin has taught me the true meaning of unconditional love, and I can’t imagine having any other dog breed.

We are incredibly blessed to have Punkin as part of our family. He’s our sweet angel, and we cherish every moment with him. I’ve often said I will never have another breed of dog besides a Pomeranian, and Punkin is why. There’s just something about these little furballs that captures your heart and doesn’t let go.

Looking Forward to the Future

As we continue to search for a brother or sister for Punkin, we are filled with excitement about the future. Adding another Pomeranian to our family will bring more joy and love to our home. In the meantime, we’ll continue to spoil Punkin, give him all the love he deserves, and enjoy every moment with our little rescue Pomeranian.

A Beautiful Reminder

Punkin’s story is a beautiful reminder that rescue dogs often come with challenges but also bring incredible love and companionship into our lives. We may have started thinking we didn’t want another dog after losing our Lhasa Apsos, but Punkin showed us that sometimes, the best things in life are the ones you don’t plan for.

If you’re considering adopting a rescue Pomeranian or any other dog, I encourage you to leap. The love and joy they bring into your life are immeasurable, and you’ll find they quickly become an irreplaceable part of your family. Like our sweet Punkin, rescue dogs are often the most loyal, loving companions you could ever ask for.
