by Pommy Mommy

Niko with a strawberryHappy July, Pommy Mommies! Summer is in full swing, and here at the Pommy Mommy home, the heat is cranked up! Keeping your Pomeranian cool and comfortable is vital during these warm months, and with the 4th of July just around the corner, I’ve got the perfect summer treat to share with you. Introducing: “Pom-Sicles!” These delicious, icy popsicles are an easy-to-make treat that your Pommy will love.

Why Pom-Sicles Are a Great Summer Treat

Like us, our furry friends must stay cool and hydrated during the hot summer months. Pomeranians, with their thick double coats, are particularly susceptible to overheating. Ensuring they have access to water, shade, and cooling treats is essential. Pom-Sicles provide hydration and are packed with antioxidants from strawberries and blueberries, making them a healthy and refreshing snack.

4th of July-Inspired Ingredients

Summer is the time for all things fresh, and the 4th of July brings an abundance of delicious seasonal fruits like strawberries and blueberries. These fruits are not only tasty but also nutritious for both humans and dogs. Rich in antioxidants, they help support your Pom’s immune system and keep them feeling their best.

Because strawberries and blueberries are staples in my diet, my freezer is always overflowing. And let’s be honest, your Pomeranian deserves a cool treat while you enjoy your 4th of July feast! So why not whip up a batch of Pom-Sicles while prepping for your holiday BBQ?

Easy Recipe for Pom-Sicles

Making Pom-Sicles is super simple, and you probably already have the ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients:

  • 9 Strawberries (Fresh or frozen)
  • 1 Cup Blueberries (Fresh or frozen)
  • 10 Ice Cubes
  • 1 teaspoon Coconut Oil (Optional – good for coat and skin health)
  • Drizzle of Honey (Optional – if you want a little sweetness)

Directions:

  1. Blend the Ingredients: Combine the strawberries, blueberries, ice cubes, coconut oil, and honey (if using) in a blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Prepare the Mold: Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray or silicone mold. You can even use candy molds from a local craft store for smaller, bite-sized Pom-Sicles perfect for Pomeranians. If you’re making some for yourself, pour the extra mixture into a popsicle mold!
  3. Freeze: Place the tray or mold in the freezer for about 5 hours or until the Pom-Sicles are fully frozen.
  4. Serve & Enjoy: Once frozen, pop the Pom-Sicles out of the mold and let your Pomeranian enjoy their refreshing treat!

Why These Ingredients Are Great for Your Pom

Strawberries

Strawberries are a fantastic summer fruit that provides your Pomeranian with a good fiber and vitamin C dose. They also contain an enzyme that helps keep your Pom’s teeth white by naturally breaking down tartar.

Blueberries

Blueberries are a known superfood and a powerhouse of antioxidants. They support your Pomeranian’s immune system, improve brain health, and contribute to a shiny coat. Plus, their natural sweetness makes them irresistible to most dogs!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an optional but beneficial addition to this recipe. It can help improve your Pom’s skin and coat health and contains healthy fats that support their overall well-being. Just remember, a little goes a long way!

Honey

While honey is optional, it can be a tasty addition to Pom-Sicles. It contains natural sugars and small amounts of antioxidants. However, be mindful of how much you add, especially if your Pom has any sensitivities to sugar.

The Perfect Treat for a Hot Day

There’s nothing quite like cooling down with a frozen treat on a hot summer day, and your Pomeranian deserves the same joy! These Pom-Sicles are perfect for keeping them occupied while you and your family enjoy your 4th of July BBQ. They’ll stay cool, hydrated, and happy while snacking on something that’s not only delicious but healthy, too.

Tips for Serving Pom-Sicles

  1. Monitor the Serving Size: Even though these treats are made from natural ingredients, they should still be given in moderation. One or two Pom-Sicles per day is plenty for a small dog like a Pomeranian.
  2. Serve Outdoors: To minimize mess, it’s a good idea to serve Pom-Sicles outside or in an easy-to-clean area. They’re ice-based, so they’ll melt, and we all know how Pomeranians love to nibble and make a mess!
  3. Store the Extras: These Pom-Sicles can be stored in the freezer for a few weeks. Just pop them into a freezer-safe bag or container, and you’ll have a ready supply of refreshing treats whenever your Pom needs to cool off.

Why Pom-Sicles Are Great for Your Pom’s Health

Beyond just being a fun and cooling treat, Pom-Sicles provide some added health benefits:

  • Hydration: The high water content in these treats helps keep your Pom hydrated during hot summer days.
  • Vitamins & Antioxidants: The strawberries and blueberries are packed with vitamins like vitamin C and antioxidants that help keep your Pommy feeling their best.
  • Digestive Health: Coconut oil can promote a healthy digestive system, and the fiber from the fruits can help keep things moving smoothly.
