With summer fast approaching and the weather heating up, it’s the perfect time to treat your Pomeranian to a cool, refreshing snack! No, we’re not talking about store-bought ice cream or frozen dog treats—today, we’ll show you how to make a homemade, healthy cold treats for your Pomeranian. It’s simple, nutritious, and best of all, tailored just for your Pomeranian’s diet.
The Ice Lick Toy Inspiration
I recently came across an “ice lick toy” for dogs, where toys are frozen in water, and the dog licks the ice to cool down. While that might work for larger dogs, it’s too much for my little Pomeranians! So, I came up with my own version of a frosty treat that would suit their tiny size and delicate preferences.
Step 1: A Flavor They Love
My girls aren’t fans of plain ice, so I had to get creative with something they would enjoy—chicken broth! Bingo! Since I already make organic chicken broth for them in liquid and jello form, it was a natural choice. This broth is made from chicken backs, necks, and feet; the girls go wild for it!
I’ll include my chicken broth recipe below if you’d like to try it.
Step 2: Choosing the Right Mold
The next challenge was finding a mold that was the right size for my Pomeranians. Ice cube trays were too big, and candy molds too flimsy. After searching online, I found the perfect solution—dog bone ice cube trays! When they arrived, I was thrilled with the sturdy material and the small, pinky-finger-sized molds, which were ideal for the girls.
Step 3: Preparing the Mold
Before freezing, I washed the mold and lined it with organic coconut oil. Coconut oil is dog-safe in small amounts, and it helped ensure the treats would pop out easily once frozen.
Step 4: Freezing the Chicken Broth
After lining the molds, I filled them with my homemade chicken broth and popped the tray into the freezer. After just 45 minutes, the frozen treats were ready, and the girls were excited to try them! In our house, we call them “bitty bones.” Each Pommy reacted differently—Maggie took her treat out to the grass, Sophia ate hers in bed, and Yoki, in true diva fashion, insisted I hold hers while she licked it to death!
Homemade Chicken Broth Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 lb Organic Chicken Feet
- 4 1/4 Cups Water
- 1 tsp White Vinegar
- 1 tsp Orange Juice
Instructions:
- Wash the chicken feet thoroughly.
- Add the chicken feet, vinegar, and orange juice to a medium-stock pot.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
- Simmer for one hour.
- Remove the chicken feet and skim out any small parts.
- Let the broth cool, pour it into molds, and freeze for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Note: Chicken backs will work fine if you can’t find chicken feet at your local market. Ensure the chicken feet haven’t been bleached—always choose pink over white.
