Jordy the Pomeranian

Starting the Search for a New Friend

Jordy the PomeranianIn the winter of 2009, I was ready and excited to bring a dog into my home. I didn’t have a preference for breed, size, or gender; I was eager to find a companion. At the time, I had little understanding of the vast number of dogs living in shelters, foster homes, and on the streets, all in need of a loving forever home, enter Jordy the Pomeranian.

As I began my search, I quickly discovered countless websites devoted to canine rescue, with endless profiles of dogs waiting for someone to take them in. I was initially drawn to smaller breeds since I lived in an apartment. That’s when I came across Jordy, a nearly three-year-old, rusty-colored Pomeranian mix with a past that tugged at my heartstrings.

Meeting Jordy: A Dog with a Troubled Past

Jordy’s profile immediately caught my attention, but not for the reasons you might think. His description came with a warning: Jordy had high anxiety and would require extra care and attention. He had been re-homed six times before, including time in foster care. His previous life had been entirely of mistreatment and neglect, both physically and emotionally. Understandably, Jordy was hesitant to trust anyone.

At first, I wasn’t sure if I was ready for the challenge. I scrolled past his profile, but something about Jordy’s sad, frightened eyes kept pulling me back. Throughout the day, I revisited his profile, reading it repeatedly until it was nearly memorized. After much deliberation, I submitted an adoption application despite knowing several others had already applied. The rescue group, Furever After Small Dog Rescue, reassured me that the adoption would go to whoever was the best fit for Jordy, not simply the first person to apply.

The Adoption Process: Overcoming Hurdles

Determined to give Jordy a chance, I filled out the lengthy adoption application and went through the rigorous steps of the adoption process. There were home visits, telephone interviews, and reference checks before I could even meet him. While the process might seem daunting to some, I understood the importance of ensuring Jordy’s next home would be his last, and I was ready to prove my commitment.

Meeting Jordy for the First Time

Jordy the Pomeranian After a month of anticipation, I finally met Jordy the Pomeranian at his foster home on Vancouver Island. His foster mom cared for several small dogs, all happy and playful, but Jordy was different. While his foster siblings played together, Jordy kept to himself, hiding in the corners and shadows. He was attached to his foster mom and seemed disinterested in interacting with me.

We decided to take Jordy and another foster dog for a walk in the woods. I held Jordy’s leash, and after about 15 minutes, his foster mom suggested I let go of the leash, assuring me that Jordy wouldn’t run away. Nervous, I dropped the leash, expecting Jordy the Pomeranianto run ahead and stay close to his foster mom. But to my surprise, Jordy stayed by my side. After a moment, he stopped walking, placed his front paws on my shins, and looked up at me. I bent down to pick him up, and to my astonishment, he started licking my face!

His foster mom, shocked, exclaimed, “In the six months he’s been with me, he’s never done that to anyone.” At that moment, I knew Jordy had chosen me just as much as I had chosen him.

Bringing Jordy Home: The Transition

Jordy the Pomeranian A week later, after preparing my apartment for Jordy’s arrival, I made the trip back to Vancouver Island to bring him home. When we arrived at my apartment, Jordy immediately leaped onto the couch, settling in as if he had been there his entire life. I was overjoyed, but the transition wasn’t without its challenges.

For the first few months, Jordy’s anxiety manifested in various ways. He would circle me on walks, marking his territory in the apartment, and pant in his sleep. Each day was a new test of patience and love as we worked together to build trust. I remained committed to showing Jordy that he was finally home for good.

A New Beginning: Jordy’s Transformation

Fast forward more than four years, and Jordy the Pomeranian is an entirely different dog. The once anxious and fearful pup has blossomed into a bright, affectionate, playful companion. His quirky personality brings joy and laughter into our home every day. Whether cuddling on the couch or embarking on outdoor adventures, Jordy has become integral to our lives.

Jordy’s favorite activities include going for walks and spending time in nature. He loves camping trips and being outside with us. My fiancé and I often marvel at how much joy Jordy brings us. It’s hard to imagine our days without his happy smile greeting us when we walk through the door, or his furry body curled up beside us on lazy afternoons.
