I read an article in the Doggington Post about the benefits of Coconut Oil for dogs… but I thought it more important for Pommy Mommy’s to understand the wonderful effects of coconut oil for Pomeranians. I have been using coconut oil for cooking and it’s healthful properties for over 7 years now. I only have two oils in my pantry… Coconut and Olive… that’s it. The more I use coconut oil the more I want to use it. I have been rather lucky. I have been blessed with great skin… but now that I use coconut oil it’s even healthier looking and feels even better. Understanding the reasons I use coconut oil for myself and my husband, I knew it would have tremendous benefits for my furry babies.
Whenever Yoki or “little” Sophia get a tummy ache or their digestive system gets a little out of whack, I give them a little bit (1/4 – 1/2 a teaspoon because of their size) to help their system get back on track. Coconut oil also helps your Pomeranian digest all the nutrients in their dog food. It’s kinda like a special delivery system for nutrients. Pretty cool.
Some of the more important properties of coconut oil is that it contains Lauric Acid. Which in the right amounts in humans (about 7 -21 grams per day… about 1 – 3 tablespoons) converts to something called Monolauren, which exhibits some crazy medicinal effects and acts like an anti-viral, anti-fungal, an anti-microbial by destroying fungus, viruses and bacteria like the Terminator. If your Pomeranian has any fungus infections such as yeast, or has infections in their ear and mouth or cuts and scraps, coconut oil will help heal these infections by killing the bacteria that surrounds it.
A really big complaint I get from Pommy Mommies, is that they can’t seem to keep they furry baby’s weight down, even though they walk and exercise them. Coconut oil helps “amp” up your thyroid. So it will also have the same effect on your Pomeranian as well. This stimulation of your Pom’s Thyroid will help maintain a healthy weight, while reducing Vet bills as they get older from joint pain, arthritis, and other Pomeranian health issues associated with being overweight.
Now that we’ve talked about the inside of our Pomeranian, let’s talk about how coconut oil helps the outside… or their fur and skin. If your Pom has hot spots or dry itchy skin, you can apply it directly to the skin. Relief is just seconds away. I have put it on Mika’s foot pads and her nose when it gets a little too dry here in the Las Vegas desert. It is great to put in the bath water if your baby had fleas and has bitten its skin raw. When you add a little to their food it helps moisturize their skin and gives a noticeable improvement of their overall coat.
As Pommy Mommies keep a jar of coconut oil in your pantry for you to enjoy and one for your Pomeranian to stay healthy… you will stay looking beautiful and your Pom will be the healthiest poofball on the block.
Coconut Oil for Pomeranians Dosing
Dosage recommendations: 1 Teaspoon for every 10 lbs. Mika is the only Pom over 10 lbs, Niko, Luka and Yoki are 7 lbs and “Little” Sophia is 3 1/2 lbs. So I usually give The Boys and Yoki 3/4 of a teaspoon and “Little” Sophia a 1/4 teaspoon.

Coconut oil is should always be organic. We buy it by the gallon from Tropical Traditions. Some have a slight hint of coconut but most are neutral in smell.
I’m going to go pick some up tomorrow 🙂
My Watson has dry skin something awful I will get some and try it. Should I massage it in all over his body?
I drink coconut water regularly (it has more potassium than bananas) and one day, when my fur baby had tummy issues, read that it’s also good for dogs. I asked my vet and she confirmed that it’s good for them and would help her not dehydrate. My little Eli LOVES it! When she sees me drinking it, she dances around me until I give her some.

I am seeing coconut oil more and more now and am just beginning to become familar with it’s benefits for humans and our pets, but how do you know which is the right one to use? In the grocery stores, it shows for cooking, for different things, are they all the same? what do we look for, can we ingest all kinds and brands?? Wanting to learn more about it,, thanks,
I love this information. Malyna is a little chunky but she is so active so I’m going to whole foods and add this to their diet immediately. Thanks pommy mommy
Just picked up some at Publix brand name Lou Ana will this brand be ok for my Pomeranian. He has such bad skin on one side. I know its bacterial he has been to the vet 4 times and they give him the thing everytime but it always comes back. I hope this will work, he only 2 1/2 years old. Please let me know if this brand is ok for him.
Is the brand I use important or just that it is organic?

Do yo give them coconut oil all days? Or just once a week?
I need help with my girls butts (3) . I do not like the lion cut but my groomer keeps encouraging. their poop gets stuck back there. It seems closer the actual opening than their fur. can you help?

Please do not give your dog coconut oil as it can cause pancreatitis in some dogs. My dog is fighting for her life after I gave her homemade coconut oil treats. It has cost me more than $2000 in vet bills so far.
My Riley gets about 3/4 tsp daily because he was very interested in me, rubbing coconut oil on my feet about 6 weeks ago. I keep the jar in my bedroom, and thought I would put some in the lid to see if he would like it. Wow! He loves it!! No I’ll effects. I have been trying to get his weight down from 14 lbs to 13. Hopefully this will help. And BTW, the oil is the best thing I’ve ever used to keep my feet soft, without dry skin and callouses. Much better than pricey creams & lotions I’ve tried.
How often are we supposed to give coconut oil to our Pom babies
Can too much cocoanut oil cause pancreatitis in my 11 pound Pom? She absolutely loves coconut oil and asks for it daily. Now I’m worried!
How much is safe? Thanks, Qtip’s mommy
