Beneath their beautiful coats, Pomeranians have skin much like ours. Like us, their skin is the largest organ and is a barrier between their internal systems and the outside world. This essential organ not only protects your Pommy from harmful organisms but also regulates their body temperature and supports other vital systems. Though it’s critical to their overall health, Pomeranian skin can experience many issues throughout their life.

What Causes Skin Problems in Pomeranians?

A wide range of issues—such as allergies, parasites, fungal infections, and more—can trigger Pomeranian skin problems. Many people mistakenly assume that these issues aren’t severe, but untreated skin problems can severely impact both their comfort and health. If not addressed promptly, a minor allergic reaction can lead to constant scratching, which may break the skin and allow bacterial infections to develop.

Spotting Skin Problems in Pomeranians

It’s not always easy to detect when your Pomeranian has a skin problem. Their thick fur often conceals affected areas, and Poms are naturally skilled at hiding discomfort. Many parents don’t realize their Pommy needs medical help until the problem has progressed. However, subtle signs can help you intervene early. Knowing what to look for will ensure your Pomeranian receives timely care and relief.

How to Tell If Your Pomeranian’s Skin Problem is Serious

Several signs may indicate your Pom is experiencing a skin problem. Pay attention to the following symptoms:

1. Persistent Itching

While some itching is normal, excessive scratching could signal a deeper issue. Here’s how you can tell if your Pomeranian’s itching has become a problem:

  • Your Pom can’t stop scratching, biting, or grooming, even during meals or playtime.
  • Their itching interrupts their sleep—or yours—keeping everyone awake.
  • Scratching becomes so severe that your Pomeranian starts losing hair.
  • Your Pommy appears uncomfortable or restless from constant itching.

2. Rashes and Sores

Rashes and sores are often painful for Poms, and they may resist being touched near the affected areas. You might discover these sores while brushing their fur. Rashes can also develop from allergens like certain plants or flea bites. Flea allergy dermatitis is a common reason Pomeranians scratch excessively, and repeated biting and licking can cause further skin damage.

3. Hair Loss

Excessive scratching often leads to hair loss. If your Pomeranian has bald patches, especially in areas they’ve been scratching, it’s time to consult a veterinarian. Hair loss in Poms is not only a cosmetic issue but could indicate underlying skin conditions requiring treatment.

4. Dry and Flaky Skin

Dry, flaky skin can signify parasitic infections, such as mange or other skin problems. A Pom with dry skin may look as though they have dandruff, with visible flakes in their fur. If you part your Pommy’s hair and notice flakes on the skin, further investigation by a vet is advised.

5. Signs of Skin Infections

When left untreated, allergies or other skin problems can escalate into bacterial infections. Watch for these signs:

  • Red, inflamed skin that feels warm to the touch.
  • Pustules or crusty patches forming on the skin.
  • A foul odor from the affected area.
  • Pus or other oozing fluids from sores.
