The Great Pomeranian Escape: For the Love of Car Rides

Maggie’s Love for Car Rides

Pomeranian escapeAlmost every time I open the door to the garage, my Pomeranian, Maggie, decides it’s time for a car ride. She instinctively knows when I’m about to leave the house and hop in the car. (I think she has ESP!) Sometimes, if I’m heading to a dog-friendly place like the bank, I let her tag along. But often, she invites herself for her own little Pomeranian escape as the designated passenger!

As the door to the garage opens, Maggie immediately sticks her little head through the doorway and stubbornly refuses to pull it back. She knows she has the “cuteness” card up her sleeve, and she uses it to her advantage. She nudges her nose against the door, pushing it open with her head. I try not to crush her little noggin, but then she gives me the “Aw, come on, Mommy! Take me with you!” look. And, of course, my heart melts. Just like that, she becomes my co-pilot for the ride.

Maggie has also perfected the art of a Pomeranian escape. She knows how to slip through the smallest of openings when I’m distracted, making her way to the garage before I even realize it. There’s no stopping her once she’s set her mind on a ride, and these Pomeranian escapes are becoming more frequent!

The Ritual of Traveling with Pomeranians

Speaking of traveling, getting my Pomeranians ready for a ride is a funny ritual. I wish it were as simple as opening the car door and having them pile in. Oh no, my princesses have assigned seating and expect their designated spots! They each know exactly where they belong, and they won’t settle for anything less than their usual setup.

Here’s how it all unfolds when I travel with my three Pomeranians:

Maggie’s Sneaky Antics and Pomeranian Escape Tactics

I usually start by calling out, “Maggie! Hey Maggs, wanna go bye-bye?” But, true to form, there’s no response. I whistle and call again, “Maggie, come here, girl!” Still nothing.

At this point, I usually head upstairs to check her favorite hiding spot—under the bed. I call out, “Maggie, wanna go bye-bye?” and, lo and behold, a little blonde head peeks out from under the bed skirt. She does her classic “army crawl” and emerges from her cozy sleeping nest, excited and hyper, jumping and spinning in circles.

She’s ready for her next Pomeranian escape. As I make my way back downstairs, Maggie zooms past me, racing for the door before I even have a chance to grab her travel bag. She’s a master of quick Pomeranian escapes, making sure she’s first in line for the trip.

The Other Pomeranians Catch On

Maggie’s excitement is contagious. The other Pomeranians, Yoki and Sophia, quickly catch on to the commotion. I open the door to the garage, and all three girls follow me eagerly. Their tails wag in excitement, ready for their grand adventure.

First In: Maggie, The Queen

Maggie at the doorMaggie is always the first to jump into the car. As the Queen of the house and the Pomeranian who’s been with us the longest, she claims the back seat spot directly behind me. She knows this is her seat, and no one dares to argue otherwise.

However, Maggie’s frequent Pomeranian escapes mean she’ll always find a way to claim the best spot before anyone else has a chance. She’s mastered the art of being first in line, whether it’s for a ride or a snack!

Next Up: Sophia and Her Car Seat

Pomeranian escape Sophia is next. She needs her blanky and car seat adjusted just right before she’ll settle in. Once she’s comfortable, she’s good to go. Sophia is the calm, quiet traveler—she just needs a cozy spot to relax.

First-Class Seating for Yoki

Pomeranian escapeLastly, I open the passenger door and place Yoki in her “First Class Seating.” Yoki tends to get car sick if she rides in the back, and she made quite a mess a few times before we figured that out. (Thankfully, I upgraded to leather seats!) Now, she sits up front with me, and I always tell her she’s my special, first-class Pomeranian.

To prepare for any accidents, I place towels down on the floor mats, just in case. That way, I’m ready for easy clean-up if needed.

Ready for the Ride

Before we hit the road, I do a quick tail check—1, 2, 3—everyone is here, and everyone is secure in their spot. I start the car, and off we go on our little Pomeranian journey, with Maggie, Sophia, and Yoki happily enjoying their ride, each in their rightful place. Maggie, ever the queen of Pomeranian escape tactics, takes her usual spot, proud and satisfied as my designated co-pilot.
